IMG_1087[1]Hull Citadel Band presented a Spring Festival in its own hall on 18th May 2013, which was well attended by members of the corps and friends. This year guests soloists were Hull University Barbershop Quartet and Ben Dixon (Eb Bass/ Grrimethorpe Colliery Band). The event was compered by Ian Wileman (Sheffield Citadel) who is a good friend of the band. This, together with Bandmaster Jean Longwa’s choice of music made for a varied evening in which there was something for everyone.

HCB made a great start with ” On the King’s Highway” march by Erik Leidzen, followed by “Such Love” ( Paul Drury) which reminded the audience of the Love of God before the opening prayer by Janet Pearson. It was with a real sense of anticipation that the first guest was introduced. Now a student at Salford University in Manchester, Ben Dixon has become an experience soloist in his own right, and his opening numbers were “Episodes and echoes” (Peter Meecham) and “And everything is still”. These two pieces proved to be an ideal start for him to display his tone and virtuosity, with the ability to include different styles within the piece.IMG_1088[1]

Ben was followed by Barbershop Quartet who sang with clear tone, clean diction and amazing harmony, communicating with the audience. The first half concluded with the band playing of “The Hill of Calvary” (Bramwell Cole). The performance was given poignancy by Ian Wileman’s description of the message behind the music.

One of the highlight of the festival was Ben’s performance of “FNUGG” which left the audience impressed with his multi phonics. Following the scripture reading, the band played ” I know thou art mine” (Len Balantine), followed by Las Lluvias Grandes (Peter Graham) which was well received. IMG_1090[1]

The evening concluded with Bandmaster Jean Longwa’s adaptation of Eric Ball’s ” God be in my head” which brought the festival to peaceful close. Despite, difficulty in terms of number, God is still using Hull Citadel Band to proclaim the gospel effectively in the city of Hull and across the country. We are looking forward to our next Spring Festival on 17th May 2014. We hope to see you there.
